CBD Synergy: CBD and Omega 3’s for antidepressant support
We have seen in the nutraceutical world evidence that supplementing with Omega 3 fatty acids (fish oil, DHA, chia seeds, etc.) can have antidepressant effects. Recent research in the cannabinoid world has given us a clue of the possible mechanism. This may be (Omega 3 levels) one of the major determinants why CBD products work for some people, but not for others.
Standard American Diet (SAD) and Omega 3 Levels
Based on the general SAD, Americans have too high of levels of omega 6’s to omega 3’s (some experts estimate about a 20-1 ratio). This imbalance of fatty acids contribute to chronic inflammation and psycho-emotional imbalances including depression. We’ve seen a correlation, however, if someone with depression consumes extra omega 3’s (either through diet or supplementation), their symptoms often get better or resolve completely, especially if they also decrease their omega 6 fatty acids (vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, meats).
Anandamide (AEA), the “Bliss Molecule”
Anandamide, (from the word Ananda, meaning bliss in Sanskrit) is a neurotransmitter and endocannabinoid (a cannabinoid our bodies produce), that binds to specific receptor sites, is an integral part of the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). We primarily produce anandamide when we move our bodies. We produce a high amount of anandamide when we exercise and have sex, which is the explanaiton why we can feel so good (such as the Runner’s high) when we exercise hard.
Omega 3’s and 6’s and receptor sites for bliss
We now know that the building blocks of our receptor sites are made up of fatty acids, and when we are low on omega 3’s, and excessively high in omega 6’s, our receptor sites are not as active, and therefore, the effects of producing anandamide will not have as much of an effect if we’re low in omega 3’s.
Omega 3’s/6’s and Anandamide production
For this reason, as mentioned in the book, “Road to Ananda,” Germano explains that the combination of CBD and Omega 3 fatty acids can be a very potent multivitamin to support the ECS. Since we produce high amounts of anandamide when we exercise, I’d propose a step further and say that adding regular exercise to CBD and omega 3 supplementation is the “holy trinity” to supporting the ECS. Remember, the ECS and regular anandamide production isn’t just about supporting the psycho-emotional side of us, but helps us stay in balance or homeostasis, regardless of what part of us is out of balance.
